Fall Cookie Decorating Kits

The holiday season is upon us and all I can think about is all the cookies I want to bake. As someone who loves hosting, Cookie Decorating Kits are my favorite go to. Not only are they SO cute, they are also delicious and provide a hands on activity to entertain guests. Especially children!

They are also a great option for bakers looking to add another selection to their holiday menu. DIY Cookie Kits are a great easy option because all you have to do is bake and package – no spending hours and hours on actually decorating the cookies.

What is a Cookie Decorating Kit?

Cookie Decorating Kits or Decorate It Yourself (DIY) Cookie Kits are packages (packaging will depend on how many cookies are included in the kit) filled with blank cutout sugar cookies, bags of icing, sprinkles, scribe, and sometimes fun trinkets and instructions. They allow your customer (or guests) the experience of decorating festive cookies without spending hours in the kitchen baking dough and prepping icing.

Make a Plan

Cookies

First come up with a plan. Decide how many cookies you want in the kit and if they will be all the same cookie or different.

This year I wanted to offer a small, more personalized option so I decided to include two cookies in different shapes: a pumpkin and acorn.

Last year I did a larger option which included 8 cookies in four different designs: pumpkin, ghost, candy corn, and candy.

Some bakers like to offer 6 cookies in a box or 12.

Also decide on the flavor of cookie you want to make.

Icing

For my small kit I chose to add two bags of icing: orange and brown.

For my larger kit last year I chose four colors: white, yellow, orange, and purple.

Extras

Because these kits are aimed towards children to have fun and no necessarily create master pieces I like to include a small container of sprinkles.

This year I also included some candy corn and fun fall stickers as a special treat.

Toothpicks or cocktail picks can also be included to help spread icing around.

You may also want to include instructions that show some cookie inspiration of what the cookies might look like when they are done. I did not include that this year because of the simplicity of the designs. Well that and because I am lazy.

When I did my larger kit last year that was Halloween themed I also include some fun little trinkets like glow in the dark spiders, plastic spider webs and fake fingers.

Packaging

Now that you know what the cookie kit will include now is the time to decide how to package everything up.

You could also start with your packaging to help determine what to include! That’s actually what I did. I had some small charcuterie boxes and knew I wanted to use them for my kits.

I decided to add some paper shred to help give the cookies a little cushion and of course my cookies were packaged in a heat sealed bag.

The containers came with bakers twine which was a nice looking touch. I have also seen festive tags and ribbons/bows included to make packaging extra nice.

You also might want to consider having bags available for customers who bought more than one.
